Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle

Episode #43

The Five Vows

They're trapped in the land of LeCourt. Through some kind of magic barrier, Mokona is unable to take them all to the next world. Even after Fay used his magic for the very first time to help him, Mokona could only transport everyone to a different location in the same country. What's worse is that because they had gotten Sakura one of her feathers back by stealing it, the entire security force of LeCourt is tracking them down and magical/tech wanted posters have already appeared throughout the city moments after the feather was taken.

As they hide in a dark alleyway, Kurogane confronts Fay, once more, about his magic. Fay had mentioned before that he had promised himself that he would no longer use magic and Kurogane wants to know why he chose to break that promise now.
Fay says that the kind of magic that he used to protect them all was created by a whistle and that it's a different kind of magic than the one that he has refused to use.

Mokona meanwhile is feeling very sick and doesn't know why. It seems something is preventing him from transporting them away from this country still.
They all decide to hide in the library where they found the first book of memories that was a copy of the feather.
Once they get there, despite the fact that they're being hunted, Syaoran decides to continue studying the books of this country. Fay comments on how Syaoran gets so caught up in research that he looks like a different person sometimes. This throwaway comment reminds Kurogane of the phenomena that he has experienced twice now, that of Syaoran losing control of his body and acting like someone else.

He mentions this to Fay and they both conspire to find out what the deal with Syaoran's past is (even Syaoran can't remember the first few years of his life before he came to the Country of Clow). They plan to use the Book of Memories copy to view Syaoran's memories but Kurogane screws up and ends up having Syaoran once more go into a trance and view more of his own memories.

Elewhere, the main library's security has held a meeting and, using a special kind of magic and technology hybrid tracking system have found a way to locate the gang and found them in the library!

Meanwhile, Syaoran has been taken to a different period of Kurogane's past where he is a teenager and for some reason is fighting Souma in a wonderfully painted bamboo forest. Princess Tomoyo interrupts their fighting and summons Kurogane to her hall for a meeting.
Once there, Tomoyo presents him with a replic of his sword that she had promised to make. She tells him how it has taken a long time to make it but it has been worth it. Despite her making it for him however she says that she will only give it to him if he pledges his life to hers and to always serve her. Kurogane gives her an incredulous look but eventually decides to pledge himself. Before he can however, Souma, who had been standing next to Tomoyo tells her that that should be enough and Tomoyo then announces that the whole thing with the pledge was a joke but on a more serious note Kurogane must make five vows to lead his life by if he wishes to have the sword; 1) Behave peacfully towards your comrades, 2) Stop fighting in the Country of Japan, 3) Never forget mercy, even towards an enemy, 4) Value everyone's life and 5) Use your strength to protect those dear to you.

Kurogane agrees. Tomoyo places her fingers near the sword and a bright light begins to glow and Kurogane's dead mother and father reapear! Tomoyo blesses the sword, his parents who look very happy disapear and she gives him his new sword.

Back in the library, Fay has created a magical wall to hide them from the security's tracking and their soldier's eyes. Eventually though they discover the wall, break it and begin to move towards Kurogane, Mokona, Fay and Sakura. Kurogane readies his sword and moves in to fight. Suddenly Syaoran appears by his side, having finished his journey in the book, tells Kurogane that he will fight by his side.

A giant winged lion guardian appears and begins flying towards them, but as soon as it gets within fighting range it transforms into a super cute chibi winged lion and hugs Kurogane's face. Syaoran asks the two female security leaders what's going on and they both explain that they had just spoken to the king of LeCourt and that he is pleased the dangerous feather is now gone (it is now part of Sakura again) and that they want to celebrate Syaoran and everyone as heroes. Syaoran declines their offer of participating in celebrations as it is their mission to find the feathers.

With that they all walk safely to the outskirts of the city where a stone ruin stands, most likely with the ability to allow Mokona to move them to the next world. They all talk about how this country has helped them learn more about each other's past and become closer as friends.

Mokona powers up and they all move on to their next adventure.

My Original Impression

Sunday, September 03 2006

This was a rather low key finale to this magical arc in my opinion and even though I loved the Kurogane flashbacks in the previous episodes and even liked the one in this episode, I REALLY think that more should have been focused on the gang's current situation.

Great to see more Fay magic though and the animation was very well done plus it was good to hear Maya's song that was on the Jet single included in the series as it really is a nice song.

An amazing arc who's finale didn't hold up. But it wasn't bad either. Just not great.

The next episode looks to be the best of the series, featuring CCS's Kero!
