Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle

Episode #32

A Date with a Magician

It's dark and moody. Fay is running for his life, terrified of the powerful being chasing him. It's snowing and there's no escape, he runs faster and faster, yet still he can't get away. He wakes up.
The gang has already arrived in a new world and have been camping in a cave around a fire, getting some much needed rest. Fay woke from his nightmare with a start, obviously disturbed by what he had just dreamt. But he doesn't tell anyone about it.

The next "morning" they realise that the sun hasn't risen yet, in fact they begin to suspect that the sun doesn't rise in this world at all! The walk up to a restaurant and knock on the door to get some information and who should answer? Yukito and Toya! They invite the travelers inside and all of a sudden food appears for them to eat! Yukito explains that in this world, everyone can use magic. Yukito's magic ability is to summon clothes and Toya's is to summon food (a perfect couple!).
What's more interesting is the fact that every year a new king is chosen from the people in this world to lead the people and that Toya was King for a year previously.

Suddenly two familiar little creatures appear, Kotoko and Sumomo! The talk for a bit and then magically teleport everyone (minus Toya and Yukito) to the royal palace! Kotoko explains that the people's magic comes from the sun and since the new king has been chosen the sun has ceased rising in the morning. Apparently they're concerned for the person chosen as the king as they have refused to do their kingly duties and may be depressed.
She asks Fay to use his magic to convince the person to be the king, but he refuses, explaining that he has promised himself not to use magic again. They don't like this one bit and teleport them to the "Guest Room" which turns out to be a gaol cell.

While imprisoned, Mokona announces that there is no feather in this world. Upon hearing this Kurogane breaks down the cell door and they escape. Suddenly, knights start to march towards them. The gang splits up with Syaoran and Kurogane holding off the knights and Sakura, Fay and Mokona trying to escape.
They make it past several guards and up a stairwell to a strange room. The king's room!

Fay is shocked to see that the king is this world's Chi, someone who Fay knew in his own world. Before he can speak to her, Kotoko and Sumomo appear and explain that when a king is chosen, all their memories are erased as they need a king to be pure of heart. When their term is up, their memories are returned to them.

Fay states that Chi looks depressed and Mokona screams that he can sense her loneliness due to her confinement in the palace. Fay introduces himself to her and says that he wants to be her friend. This pleases her greatly so she takes his hand and teleports them both outside, much to the objection of Kotoko and Sumomo.
Fay takes Chi to the shop from before where Yukito makes Chi a new dress and Toya warns them about something (off screen) before they hit a cafe and Fay teaches Chi how to speak. They also take in a festival!

Meanwhile, Kotoko and Sumomo have dispatched numerous knights to track down Chi and Fay while Sakura, Mokona, Syaoran drop by the shop where Yukito and Toya explain that Chi is a magical character who was created by a great magician and will die if she leaves the city grounds.
Just outside Fay and Chi are being chased by several knights. Kurogane and Syaoran save them just in time by destroying a few of the knights who turn out to be magical. Rather than thank them however, Chi teleports herself and Fay away to the city gates which she opens with her magic powers.

She tells Fay that she wants to be with him forever and asks him to run away with her. Knowing that leaving the city will kill her, Fay talks her out of it by explaining that running away from your problems my give you bigger ones. She doesn't understand but agrees with him, cries and hugs him. She's sad and happy at the same time and agrees to return to the palace.
Suddenly, the sun comes out. The eternal night is over!

Later that day, Fay, Kotoko, Sumomo, Yukito and Toya all gather in front of the palace to say goodbye. Chi is sad to see Fay leave but he assures her that they will meet again. She smiles. They're gone and the sun is shining.

My Original Impression

Saturday, June 05, 2006

Wow... I LOVED this episode! Seriously, this second season of Tsubasa Chronicles is really changing my opinion (and I hope yours) of how great anime-only stories and worlds can be!

In today's ep we get an Italian influenced world with magic, knights and a princess plus some great characterisation of Fay which gives him so much more depth than what he's had so far in the anime. Parts of his past with Ashura and Chi are both touched upon with some great animation (the best this season!) plus a new vocal song towards the end (sounded very .Hack//ish).

5/5 stars all around! Just great in every way! The whole episode felt like watching a mini movie with it's pacing and mix of action, romance and drama. I still can't believe how great this second season is.

Next week we return to manga inspired arcs with the begining of the massive Ashura storyline! Let's hope they keep the pace up like they did with the Piffle arc.

p.s. Anyone seen Miyuki this season? I havn't seen her in one episode!

Today's Crossovers

Ashura Ou: The powerful Ashura Ou returns this week in a dream sequence. For those that didn't know, Ashura Ou is from CLAMP's first series, RG Veda.

Yukito: Another version of Card Captor Sakura's Yukito pops up in this episode. Funnily enough he has magic powers just like the one in the Kingdom of Clow.

Toya: Card Captor Sakura's Toya also returns this week. An ex-king of this world and with the magical power to create food. Bet Yukito loves that!

Kotoko: Kotoko comes from CLAMP's Chobits. Personality in touch.

Sumomo: Sumomo also comes from CLAMP's Chobits.
.

Chitose: And so does Chitose in her second Tsubasa Chronicle appearance, though just an image on a painting.
