Sunday, December 21, 2008 Tsubasa on Bluray  A very interesting article here suggests that the first season of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle is due for release on Bluray in 2009. It also mentions that the series was made in high definition (something I didn't know). Will post more info as it comes available. Something else worth mentioning is that a Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles: Season 1 DVD Set has been released. I had no idea about this until I stumbled across it on Amazon. If you haven't bought the first season yet, this could be worth checking out. Basically contains the separate DVDs from the first season in one thin pack. With Shunmuki translating as "Spring Exposure" and the obvious Spring theme of the OAVs (as seen by the sakura trees on the new site layout) I think it becomes pretty obvious that the assumed translation of "Tsubasa Shunraiki" as meaning "Book of Thunder" is incorrect and that the alternate translation "Spring of Next Year" is the correct one. Tsubasa Shunraiki / Spring of Next Year & xxxHolic Shunmuki / Spring Exposure Makes a lot of sense, but I could be wrong. What do you think? I've been adjusting the header text sizes and fonts as well as cleaning up the image spacings in the Tsubasa Anime Episode Guides and adding DVD information to the episode pages. Speaking of DVDs, I've also updated the Tsubasa DVD Shopping Guide and the Tsubasa Manga Shopping Guide by adding all the latest cover images and shopping links for those DVDs and Mangas coming out in the next few months. I've also added a cool feature I've been experimenting with on my Sailor Moon site that you can see on the right hand nav menu that randomly shows a screencap from an anime episode. If you click on it, it'll take you to the episode guide for that Tsubasa anime episode. What do you think? In the past few days I've seen a lot of people visiting the Tsubasa Shunraiki page so I'll try my best to add more media and info there asap. To keep things consistent I'll probably be doing what CLAMP NOW is doing and stick with referring to it as Tsubasa Shunraiki. Still no word on what the sister xxxHolic OAD will be called. News has been pretty slow but there've been several big Tsubasa announcements in the past few weeks well worth mentioning. The OAV (or OAD as people are saying now with the move from VHS to DVDs) sequel to Tsubasa Tokyo Revelations and xxxHolic Kei currently just going by the name, "Tsubasa / xxxHolic Project" has been postponed from January 2009 to February due to the delay in the manga. An official site has been launched but no other major news so far. The second season of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles has premiered in English and Japanese on Region 1 DVD with the release of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle Season 2 Starter Set. The second DVD is due for release later this month on the 30th of September and is now up for preorder. Manga-wise we've got a bit of a wait with the next volume, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle #19 not coming out until the 19th of November. Tsubasa #20 is being released a bit faster though with a 27th of January 2009 release date set. Well the recent manga release of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles has revealed that 2 Tsubasa DVDs will also be released as well! The teams on both DVDs being the same, does make one assume that they may be linked, similar to how the movies were and the release schedule also makes one believe so with xxxHolic #14 coming out in January and then Tsubasa coming out the following month. Should be very interesting as more official news is revealed. I just got home and threw in my new Tsubasa Tokyo Revelations 3 DVD and man did that rock or what! Not only was that one of the best episodes of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle but one of the best anime movies or episodes I've ever seen!!! The animation quality was simply stunning, easily surpassing that of the previous two volumes and even the Tsubasa Movie. I was simply in awe at where the story was going, what was happening to the characters and wanting MORE!!! Production I.G. better keep going with these OAVs! If this is the final one I'll be very disappointed!!! I'd mentioned before that Sakura's Japanese voice actress always seems to act better when working with Production I.G. and I'm proved right again. Not only was Sakura not annoying in this episode I actually found myself rooting for her! Those who were bitching about Sakura doing nothing but sleep and be cute (that includes me!) will be thrilled with what happens in this episode! Sakura puts her racing skills to the test, takes down some massive huge arse mutants and is that blood and bodily mutilation happening? I won't say any more but those who have given up on the anime definitely need to check this OAV out! Speaking of the anime it's really funny how while I was watching the OAV the anime began to make more and more sense in a similar way to how the Harry Potter books work. At the beginning of the series the storylines and characters border on childish but then halfway through bam blood and violence and revelations left and right! Those who have watched both seasons of the Tsubasa anime before watching Tokyo Revelations definitely will feel more impact from the scenes shown here. The highlight of Tokyo Revelations 3 though is something I never expected, the sudden appearance of a character from a very famous CLAMP anime series that was such a thrill to see (I literally said out loud "Oh my God!") and so well presented it was as if the character stepped right out of their own series. I can't wait to see what this character has to do with the storyline. Something else that stood out was the inclusion of a new song which made me wonder if there's going to be another Tsubasa soundtrack release in the future. Time will tell I guess. It was Hellova confusing to write, let me tell you! I didn't fully understand the whole Syaoran revelations completely until my third watch through! Talk about confusing! Of course it all makes so much sense now. Talk about a game changer! I also completely understand now why NHK didn't want this arc adapted for the anime series! There's so much blood and disturbing behaviour in this episode alone that it just couldn't be done any other way. I also created several new Tsubasa icons from Sakura's "important person" sequence. Let me just say, "Holy CRAP!". That was the craziest half hour of Tsubasa I've ever seen! Some great animation, a super fast script and a voice cast that didn't disappoint! Sakura even impressed me by not only not annoying me but actually impressing me when she was screaming out during the Syaoran battle. It's just a shame it took the actress two seasons of the anime and a movie to express some emotion. I've said it before and I'll say it again; all the Tsubasa actors seem to do so much better when directed by Production I.G. It was evident in the movie and even moreso now. xxxHolic fans will love the inclusions of Larg the black Mokona, Yuko who's never looked so beautiful and Watanuki who doesn't speak but who's voice actor lends his talents to the role of Subaru. The 17th of March can't come soon enough!!! I hope to God, Production I.G. does another Tsubasa OAV after Tokyo Revelations!!! This OAV has surpassed my expectations in every way!!! Like this site? What did I think of the first episode? In short I LOVED IT!!! The animation was beyond what I had expected for a direct to DVD release. In fact it rivalled if not exceeded the animation of the Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle theatrical movie that was released a few years back! Simply breathtaking in almost every way from the fluid action scenes to the beautiful backgrounds (those skies!). Everything was really very well done. The voice acting was also spot on which confirms what I've long suspected that Production I.G. must have very good voice directors. These are the same voices that were used in the tv series but for some reason I couldn't stand several of them (especially Sakura) but here (and also in the movie which was also made by Production I.G.) all the mains have so much more range and emotion with some standouts being Syaoran and Faye both of which never really "wowed" me in the series but shone as exceptional here. The script was also spot on though it was written by Okawa (a member of CLAMP) so I wouldn't have expected anything less. Having just read Tsubasa #15 which starts the Tokyo arc I was constantly surprised with how closely the script stuck with the manga. The direction also was heavily influenced by the manga with lots of shots looking like they were lifted right from the page. Kurogane grabbing Faye, Faye collapsing, the rounded stone and Kurogane and Kamui's fight are several examples of such influence. God, I loved this so much. What else is there to talk about? The music! I've always loved the composer from the anime series and she returns here with about a 95% new instrumental score (something I wasn't expecting). Again she really shines though unlike the series which used her tracks and just threw them behind scenes, here it looks like she composed the music for the action on screen as all the music fits flawlessly! The opening credits are INSPIRED. I never would have expected the magical circles to be used in such a way but they work very well go with Yui's Syncronicity perfectly! The ending credits have got to be one of the best ending credits I've seen. Period. Not only is the song so much more mature than what we've come to know from Tsubasa's ending themes but the on screen animation is PERFECT! The panning shots of the gang (where's Mokona though?) look like they were drawn by CLAMP themselves (they even use the clothes they're wearing on the box that came with it!) and the Dragons of Heaven and Earth all standing together is so powerful I almost forgot who the main characters of the show really were! Overall I give this 10 out of 10! This was so much more than I expected. I can't wait until January when the next DVD comes out! Like this site? Remember that Tsubasa #21 which comes with the first Tokyo Revelations DVD also comes with a DVD box to hold all three DVDs. Only first prints will be shipping with these boxes so pre-ordering is highly recommended. #21 is due for release in just a few days on the 16th of November! Surprisingly almost everyone in the forums over there agrees with the decision! Personally I'm against fansubbing of anime and manga especially series like Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle and xxxHolic which are currently being released officially stateside as well as in Australia and other countries in English. This is why I no longer link to torrents or sites that offer Tsubasa and xxxHolic manga and anime for download. Services like those affect the sales of the series here as well as back in Japan. It looks great and the animation is the best we've seen so far for this series! In other CLAMP news, the official site for CLAMP in Wonderland 2 has opened and with it some amazing pictures have been released as well as it's own trailer which I couldn't get to work on my computer so I went through some code and found the direct link HERE! I also added the some links to the Links page which has almost everything official covered now. I found it interesting that Funimation has created a separate site for the second season of the anime. Weird. Updated the DVD Shopping Guide with links and images for the third Tsubasa DVD which crept up out of nowhere. If you haven't ordered yours yet (I just grabbed mine yesterday) ORDER NOW! This is great news as 1) we now know we'll be getting new music with the OAV and 2) There'll be a sense of continuity with the first two seasons of the anime! Seems that the OAV will be split into three 25 (approx) minute episodes spread across three DVDs. Each DVD will chip with a regular edition of the Tsubasa manga starting with volume 21 due for release on the 21st of November. The manga with the DVD (3360 Yen) will cost more than the manga without it (about 500 Yen). The best news though is that the amazing Production I.G. who animated the Tsubasa movie as well as the xxxHolic anime will be behind it! An official site has been created HERE. I'm hoping that people will actually buy these manga volumes instead of waiting for the Raw or Sub download. Projects like this are only made if they sell well and if we honestly want more Tsubasa anime this OAV has to sell well! The sales of the live action Sailor Moon DVDs sold so well that they gave the fans the special wedding Special Act and the Sailor V Act Zero. If Tokyo Revelations sells well enough it's fair to assume that (especially since the manga hasn't finished yet) more will be made. This OAV isn't going to be broadcast on TV. It's not up to viewers in Japan, it's up to how many copies sell. The first one comes with a box to hold all three DVDs and all the covers and box art will be done by CLAMP exclusively for the release. It's a great value purchase and will be at least two years before coming out in an English speaking version (if at all). I urge everyone to support this OAV. Please. Like this site? Turns out everyone's speculation was right! A Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle OAV ("Orginal Animation Video" or "Direct to DVD Movie/Series") is due for release next year entitled, "Tokyo Revelations"! Odds are it will be about the Tokyo / X arc in the manga which is right where the anime series left off. Strangely though it looks to be an exclusive for people who buy issues 21, 22 and 23 of the Japanese manga. No news on what animation studio is handling the work. I'll keep you posted on any updates! This is great news and I for one can't wait to see this thing! Update: In kind of related news, the NHK official site has updated their Faqs page concerning a third season. It's official folks! CCS Sakura was voted the 5th fave female anime character while her Tsubasa counterpart was just below her at 6th. CCS Syaoran was the 8th fave male character and his Tsubasa counterpart was way back in 22nd position. Kero was the 3rd fave mascot but Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle Mokona got NUMBER 2! Woo! The Tsubasa anime itself was the 23rd fave and the xxxHolic anime, 25th. Yuko, the dimensional witch was the 16th fave female anime character. Pretty cool! Like this site? I popped it in, gave it a watch and..... FRIGGING LOVED IT!!! I couldn't believe it! I honestly think the English version of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle is better than the Japanese version! It's amazing the difference the voices make! Honestly if you found the Japanese version boring (even I did occasionally) you have to check this out. It's one of my favourite covers in the series so far. The first to feature sakura flowers which is pretty unusual for CLAMP. In 8 days the first Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle DVD will be released! Woo Hoo! Amazon is still offering a 25% discount for all orders placed before the release date. You can get the regular DVD HERE and the "Starter Kit" which comes with the box HERE. I've already pre ordered mine! Can't wait!!! AnimeonDVD.com has already scored themselves a copy and have done a rather general review of it HERE. Well worth a look as it says what all the special features are (a LOT!) and that there is a 5.1 English surround audio mix!!! Can't wait to try this out! The Japanese DVD only had 2.0 surround. I was curious as to what the reviewer thought of the English speaking cast but he doesn't mention them at all. I'll have my copy in a week or so and will be reviewing it myself asap. WOO!) and xxxHolic #9 among other things and was disappointed to see that Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle #13 has been pushed back from a May release to the 12th of June! Not happy Jan! Completely revamped the Manga Shopping Guide tonight (check it out!) so updated all of the release dates and uploaded several new manga covers that have just been released. Speaking of covers, the cover for the second Tsubasa DVD has been released featuring Kurogane and Tomoyo. As will be the go from now on, I added it to the new DVD Shopping Guide. Before there was just a static picture and some misc information but now we have a full fledged site with some great features worth check out! There's a great English trailer in the "Story" section (possibly voiced by Yuko?) and accurate character info on all the main characters including the English voice actors for each one. The "DVD Releases" page is worth a look as it reveals that there will be 6 DVDs for the first season and that the first DVD will have five episodes! This is great as the first Japanese DVD only had the first two episodes (what a rip-off, huh?). Something else worth mentioning is the fact that we now have an official English Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle discussion forum on the site which is pretty cool. (I LOVE the feather loading animation on the site!) This site is a great effort by Funimation. Am looking forward to the xxxHolic and movies sites. Like this site? Looks like they're using artwork from the region 2 DVD covers instead of the artwork from the region 2 box. This kind of makes me happy as I've bought both Japanese region 2 boxes here in Tokyo and have been waiting for the region 1 dvds to fill them up with... but while the region 2 boxes feature unique artwork by CLAMP, the region 1 box looks more dynamic and some effort seems to have gone into designing it to make it look good on your shelf. The Japanese boxes meanwhile are just boxes with the CLAMP artwork slapped on them. No borders or frames at all and the title is slapped on the top of the box. The box will be released on the 22nd of May this year and can be pre ordered from Amazon HERE. I guess it's also worth mentioning that YesAsia has a Tsubasa Season One DVD Box which has Malay, Chinese and English subtitles for a rather cheap price. Be warned though as most English subtitles on Chinese DVDs suck and I for one will be getting the US region 1 dvds if only to hear what the characters sound like in English (Here's hoping the English Sakura isn't as annoying as the Japanese one!) It's in a very similar design to the second xxxHolic anime box, it had to be intentional. I'll be doing an in depth review this weekend, but for now here's an edit of three photos I took of the box put together. Definitely better than the first box I think. What's interesting is that the Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle #1 DVD "Starter Kit" cover is the same as the Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle #1 DVD Regular Edition but with an extra fancy border around it hinting that the box may not be the same as the Japanese version which featured a manga style drawing by CLAMP for the release. Something else that I just realised is that the anime series is being marketed as "Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle". Why is this strange? Well in Japan the anime dropped the "Reservoir" to become simply "Tsubasa Chronicle". Funny how the English version is going back to the full name used for the manga. I like it personally and always thought it was lazy on Bee Train's part to shorten the anime title. I'll open this up for discussion so post your opinions in the comments below. What do you think? Interesting. None of the episode titles come close to this. Looks like they're giving each DVD their own name. As long as they number them, I'll be happy. The Card Captor Sakura DVDs are annoying as HELL because of all the "clever" titles they gave the disks. Whoever though viewers would like titles over disk numbers needs to be drug out in the street and shot. Tsubasa looks to be getting numbers though. Yay. Like this site? Looks like they've kept the Region 2 (Japanese DVD) artwork though have replaced the title with the Del Ray manga version. No information yet on the box artwork though I'm assuming it will be the same as the Japanese. I'm kind of hoping for different artwork though as I already have the Region 2 box. Like this site? No description is given though it's kind of a given that it will at least have both English and Japanese audio tracks and an English subtitle feature. The DVD is being released in two editions: The Regular DVD is selling for US$26.99 and the "Tsubasa Starter Set" (I'm guessing the first DVD and a box) is going for a little extra at US$35.99.
