New US+Korea+Japan CLAMP Manga in 2009!

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle anime and manga news Exciting news for all CLAMP fans! Seems that Dark Horse will be producing a new CLAMP manga series that will be released simultaneously in Japan, the US and South Korea starting in 2009!

Taken from the Dark Horse website:

Last year Dark Horse celebrated its twentieth anniversary of publishing original graphic works by some of the world's greatest creators. Next year, Dark Horse celebrates their twentieth anniversary of publishing manga in English. This year, at San Diego Comic-Con Dark Horse is proud to announce that these two commitments held for so long have come together. Dark Horse will have the honor of publishing a new original manga created by Satsuki Igarashi, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Ageha Ohkawa--the manga-ka all-female supergroup known to their millions of fans worldwide as CLAMP. These four brilliant writers and artists work together to produce award-winning, best-selling manga, including RG VEDA, X, Chobits, Tsubasa, and xxxHOLiC.

CLAMP's original manga with Dark Horse will be launched simultaneously in the United States, Japan, and Korea. The story will come out in a small digest consisting of about eighty pages each, which will then be collected into trade paperbacks with bonus material. CLAMP and Dark Horse are coining the bilingual term Mangettes to describe this innovative new format for manga distribution. This digest format, or Mangette, signifies CLAMP's personal wish to reach their large international readership by now speaking to them directly as artists through Dark Horse, and on a basis of equality with their Japanese fans.

CLAMP and Dark Horse chose the term Mangettes to describe this revolutionary format, whose Japanese pronunciation, mangetsu, means "the full moon." The two kanji in mangetsu also have the individual meanings of "fulfilled" and "monthly," reflecting what will be a monthly appearance of each CLAMP Mangette.

According to CLAMP, "Mangettes are a completely brand new experience for us, too, and we're really happy to be working on this. And we're really looking forward to the day when we can bring you this new story from CLAMP, and the day when we can meet our fans face-to-face to hear what you think about Mangettes!"

"Dark Horse has made original comics for over twenty years; our editors have seen the hard work of individual Japanese creators in every manga we've ever brought over. Now we're going to work just as hard to meet the trust CLAMP has placed in Dark Horse to publish their original work," explains Mike Richardson, president and founder of Dark Horse. "Thanks to CLAMP, Dark Horse is today a manga publisher in a complete sense. After two decades of experience in adapting licensed editions of manga released previously by Japanese publishers, we will now become the original publisher of CLAMP, creators at the top of the manga world."

Soon to come, details on CLAMP's exciting new story.

Also from Publisher's Weekly:

Known for such bestselling manga series as Del Rey’s xxxHolic and Tsubasa and Tokyopop’s Chobits, CLAMP, Japan’s superstar all-female manga team, has signed a groundbreaking deal with Dark Horse Books to produce an original manga series beginning in 2009. The deal gives Dark Horse something it has lacked—a powerful shojo manga property in a U.S. market dominated by licensed shojo manga. In addition, for the first time, a major manga will be simultaneously published in three countries: the U.S., South Korea and Japan.

Dark Horse founder and publisher Mike Richardson said that the deal took two years to come to fruition, and is the company’s entry into the shojo manga category. “We didn’t just want to jump into it,” he said, emphasizing Dark Horse’s tradition of working with famed Japanese storytellers like Kazuo Koike (Lone Wolf and Cub). “If you look at manga in Japan and the huge pool of creative talent, CLAMP comes to mind. We wanted to be in business with them.”

The publisher will also pioneer a new form of publication that it calls “mangettes,” 80-page novellas of the CLAMP story in a digest form that will be released on a monthly schedule. “We’re always experimenting with format,” said Richardson. “We wanted to come up with a pleasant reading format, something fun that can be released in a form that’s similar to the way [manga] is read in Japan. Like serialized comics, the mangettes will then be bundled and released in the familiar graphic novel/tankoubon format.” Richardson expects to bundle three mangettes per tankoubon (or volume).

Michael Gombos, Dark Horse director of Asian licensing, said the simultaneous publication will benefit English-speaking manga fans, who learn about popular Japanese titles, thanks to the Web, and complain about having to wait for licensing and translation. Gombos said simultaneous publication will bring readers “closer to the Japanese experience [of reading manga], but in America.”

Exciting, huh? Possibly Tsubasa and xxxHolic may be finished by 2009 so they may have plenty of time to put into this series (.Kobato could still be going though). I wonder what it will be about? Completely new series or a continuation of existing characters?

The best thing about this is that English readers will not get spoiled by people who have been reading the Japanese version! Tsubasa has been ruined for me on several occasions due to such "fans" and it's annoyed the Hell out of me. Spoiler Warnings people!

What do you think? Leave a comment below and help spread the word! A new CLAMP manga! Puh!

CLAMP Interviews

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle anime and manga news Chibiyuuto has posted several interviews that are great reads. The most interesting one goes on about how we're now 2/3rds of the way through the main Tsubasa story and that reading xxxHolic and Tsubasa together from now on is more important than before.

I quit Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

This will be my first and last post about the anime series, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion.

I gave this series a go because CLAMP designed the characters and was illustrating the DVD covers, etc but I just can't watch any more. I got up to episode 6 and just had to turn it off. It's so blatantly racist and nationalistic it's offensive.

The portrayal of the British characters is over stereotypical in some respects (such as clothes and architecture. ) yet so completely off in other areas such as their blatant disregard for civilians during times of war and militaristic nature that it becomes almost a joke.

It's as if the tv station is trying to breed racism and reinforce an image of non-Japanese people that I though was on the way out. In the first episode for crying out loud, we have a seen of a nice, gentle Japanese elderly couple who get their brains splattered all over room simply because the British army decided to kill all civilians in the area.

This show is just offensive. If the "bad guys" were, say aliens I really wouldn't have a problem but some things should be off limits, especially in children's programming and writing a story where the "bad guys" are another nation is taking things too far.

Something else I find shocking is that it seems to encourage terrorism. Not just in the general sense though, in the sense that it's every Japanese teenager's right to stand up and fight the establishment. If that means killing people, all the better.

The leader of the terrorist cell in the show is a high school girl and the main character, Lelouch actually assassinates the overly French political leader in charge of Japan within the first few episodes.

There's enough nationalistic bull in Japan as it is without an Animé series reinforcing such deluded ideals.

I must say I'm so disappointed in CLAMP for being involved in a project like this Given their history of creating stories involving mixed racial couples (a Japanese Sakura and a Chinese Syaoran for example) and Korean myth (Legend of Chun Hyang) this comes as a complete surprise. I'm hoping that they didn't realise the story content of Code Geass before signing on.

The animation and music are top notch, but simply due to it's thematic nature I can't believe so many non-Japanese anime and manga fans are following this series and even creating fan sites and listings about it.

I for one am tuning out and writing a letter of complaint HERE.

Edit: This is a copy of the email that I just sent.

"I am writing to express my complete disgust concerning the new anime series, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion.

As an Australian, I find the series to be completely offensive and racist and something that shouldn't be on air due to the amount of influence it will have on children in Japan and other individuals.

The fact that Europeans are portrayed as villains is shocking and their portrayal inaccurate ("Yes my Lord") but the amount of racism from the main characters who are supposed to be heroes and role models for children leaves me speechless.

I also find it incredibly irresponsible, especially in a country such as Japan who has suffered at the hands of terrorists to show a series were the main characters ARE TERRORISTS who kill and assassinate people and are seen in a good light.

Until shows like this are removed from Japanese television the image of Japan being a racist one will not change in the eyes of non-Japanese both in and outside of Japan. "

I'm interested in people's opinions on this series. Feel free (as always) to comment on this post.

xxxHolic & Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle End plus CLAMP in Wonderland 2 News

Chibiyuuto has posted a report from the New Years party CLAMP threw with some info on CLAMP in Wonderland as well as how xxxHolic and Tsubasa may end.

As they said yesterday, Ashura-ou will wake up.
Then. They already talked about it previously, but they said "Tsubasa will end with a happy ending."
Then they added "Except for one certain person, it will be a happy end".
Who could that be?...Ass chin... ahem... Fei Wang, probably? It's not limited to the main characters only... right? (sweat)
But, first of all is a happy ending. How many people are relieved. Wait a bit.
Ohkawa-san said "CLAMP never drew works without a happy ending", so this means that in any way you look at it, it's a happy ending!! I mean. The happy endings she's talking about, they're not always what the readers expected/hoped to happen. No, maybe not.
Aaah. I'm full of anxiety... Give to XXXHOLiC a happy ending too.
Ah yeah! From the many conversations they did, I got that XXXHOLiC will end after Tsubasa's ending.

[About that, what was said at the event is that Tsubasa's and XXXHOLiC's end will develop together. And that when we reach Tsubasa's end, XXXHOLiC's mystery will be solved. In that sense, we would need to see Tsubasa's end firstly in order to understand XXXHOLiC's. Either way, both series will end close to each other, but that doesn't mean they'll end at the same WEEK. So we might have some chapters left after either one of them is over.

Also, it was also said that even though so far XXXHOLiC and TRC were drawn in a way that you could read one perfectly well without having to read the other too, from now on this will become more strict/severe, meaning that reading both works will help you understand better their ends.]
